Kit advice with Montane

Here Race Director Shane Ohly and RAW Adventure’s Kate Worthington share their advice on kit for the Montane Dragon’s Back Race® - including recommendations for items on the mandatory kit list but also lots of top tips from personal experience:

Tips from the Lake District with Shane

  • Your synthetic insulated upper layer for bad weather days is mandatory kit. Here Shane wears the Montane Icarus Lite Jacket. You may also want to consider a more substantial waterproof if the weather forecast is particularly bad.

  • If you have any kind of accident during the event and need to stop then it’s really important to look after yourself. If the weather is poor then this means putting on all your layers and getting into your survival bag.

  • Think about what personal items may make your journey more comfortable. Inside Shane’s bag is lip balm, a running cap (for good or poor conditions), lube for any chafing issues and some Paracetamol for all those aches and pains!

Tips from Snowdonia with Kate

  • Kate likes to pack a minimum of 1 litre of water inside her Montane Gecko VP 12+ running pack - but does have space for more on days when water is a little sparse and also takes a little pouch to fill up on the go from fast running streams up high.

  • Shoe preference is definitely a personal choice - here Kate chooses something with a rugged sole for earlier in the week which will be best on wet rock and then something with more cushioning for later in the week when her feet may need a bit more support!

  • Kate’s luxury items include face lotion and moisturiser to look after her dry skin and to prevent any cracked lips. She will also take some comfy and airy slippers to wear around camp in the evening.
